How a job runs

Five steps, and you know what happens at each one.

Nothing here is a surprise. You can read the whole sequence, including what you need to decide and when.

01

Enquiry and requirements

You describe the rooms, the walls involved, and the general look you want.

02

Site visit and measurement

A visit to measure wall height and width, and to note switches, doors, and any damp patches.

03

Design selection and sample check

You review material and pattern options against your room's light and size.

Worth knowing

Things that decide the outcome.

Standard roll size

Common widths are roughly 53 cm or 90 to 100 cm, with lengths often around 10 m

Roll width and length decide how many rolls a wall needs and where seams fall. Sizes vary by manufacturer.

Pattern repeat

The vertical distance before a printed pattern repeats, commonly 0 to 64 cm

A larger repeat means more trimming waste, so a wall can need more rolls for the same visible area.

Same batch or lot number

All rolls used on one wall run should share one batch or lot number

Dye can vary slightly between production batches, which can show as a visible colour shift between rolls.

New plaster curing time

Often 4 to 8 weeks before papering, depending on climate and wall thickness

Papering over damp plaster traps moisture underneath and can cause the paper to lift or grow mould.

Paste the wall vs paste the paper

Two different application methods, set by the product, not chosen freely by the installer

Using the method meant for a different material can cause weak adhesion or a shorter working life.

Colour show-through

A dark or strongly coloured wall can show through a light or thin paper

A light-coloured primer coat evens this out before hanging, especially under pale wallpaper.

Choosing a material

Non-woven, vinyl, grasscloth — they behave differently.

Heat, humidity and direct sunlight change what will last on your wall. The guide covers what each material is, where it works, and where it does not.

Non-woven

A sheet made from pressed natural and synthetic fibres, not from paper pulp alone.

Hung by: Paste the wall

Vinyl wallcovering

A vinyl face on a paper, non-woven or fabric backing; texture and construction vary by product.

Hung by: Varies by product. Check the roll label for paste-the-wall or paste-the-paper.

Heavyweight vinyl wallcovering

A heavier vinyl wallcovering whose backing, construction and hanging method depend on the product sheet.

Hung by: Varies by product. Check the roll label.

Before you ask for a quote

Work out roughly how much you need.

Put in your room size and how many doors and windows are on the walls you want papered. You get the wall area and an approximate roll count, calculated in your browser. Nothing is sent anywhere.
